Avery family papers, 1791-1825.

Documents belonging to Joseph Avery and family of Plymouth, Mass. The bulk of the collection (11 documents) are deeds. Two of which are pew deeds (1816,1820) purchased in the Plymouth Meeting House. Most of the remaining deeds concern purchases of land by Joseph Avery in Plymouth except two which pertain to the purchase of land in Burton, Strafford County, N.H. (1820). Other documents of interest are an original certificate of copyright issued in 1812 to Joseph Avery, publisher and book seller; memorandum from the estate of the Rev. Joseph Avery of Holden, Mass. for the sale of real estate and the division of proceeds to his widow and heirs; a deed dated 1799 from John Bishop to Benjamin Morton of Plymouth. An 1817 deed where Joseph Avery purchases the same property from Mr. Morton's heirs; certificate of appointment of Joseph Whitecombe as Deputy Master of band music of the first division of the militia of Mass., signed by Brigadier General Henry Dearborn. This document was in the possession of C.F. White of Boston, a possible descendant of Nancy Avery White. The oldest document in the collection, dated 1791, is a deed from Ephraim Spooner of Plymouth, acting as power of attorney for Capt. John Carou of Middleborough, to Dorothy Bartlett, sister of John Carou. The relationship of these individuals to the Avery family is unknown.
